Lenses for eyeglasses

LENS MATERIALS
Polycarbonate: This is the most common lens material used at Thomas Eye Care. It is thinner and lighter than plastic or glass. Poly is also impact resistant and, therefore, is used in work-related safety glasses. This makes it an excellent choice for children as well.
High-Index: These lense are made of a plastic material that has a higher index of refraction than traditional plastic or polycarbonate. This makes it thinner and lighter than poly and also improves the optics.

LENS TYPES
Single Vision: Lens with one prescription for either distance, intermediate or near vision.

Bifocal: Lens with two prescriptions for distance and near vision or for intermediate and near vision. Trifocal: Lens with three different prescriptions: distance, intermediate and near vision.

Progressive Addition Lens (PAL): Lens where the prescription slowly changes from the distance prescription to the near prescription as the patient's focus moves down the lens with minimal head movement. This type of lens is sometimes referred to as a "no line bifocal".

LENS TREATMENTS
Anti-Reflective Coating: Also called anti-glare coating. It is an anti-reflective coating that eliminates reflections on the front and back surface of the lense. It is sharpens vision because more light is able to pass through the lense instead of being bounced off the lens. It also gives some UV protection. Glare is significantly decreased so that your eyes are less fatigued at the end of the day. Thomas Eye Care recommends ARC on all its lense.

Photochromic Lense: These are lense that change from a clear tint inside and at night to a darker tint outdoors. This process is the result of exposure to UV rays. These lense provide excellent visual comfort in any light as well as UV 400 protection. Ninety-three percent of us use sunscreen to protect our children's skin from sun damage but only 8% of us protect their eyes. Now that we are beginning to understand just how dangerous UV exposure can be Dr. Thomas is ensuring your protection by highly recommending transitions lenses to all her patients.
